Socialism 2016: Socialism in the air

A four-day conference of socialist politics, debate, and entertainment
July 1–4, 2016 • Hyatt Regency McCormick Place • Chicago

The deadline for getting the early-bird, full-conference, ticket registration price of $80 is midnight (CST) on Sunday, May 22. After that deadline the price for a full-conference ticket will rise by $20 to $100/ticket. To register for the conference, navigate to the conference registration page of this website.

Housing is not included as part of conference registration. Please use this link to book rooms at the hotel:

This year the Socialism Conference will be held at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place hotel, located at 2233 South Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, just a few short blocks from Chinatown on Chicago’s South Side.

The Hyatt is offering guests to our conference a discounted room rate of $105 a night until June 15th. After that deadline all remaining rooms are released back into their general pool and can be booked by hotel guests that will not be attending the conference. If you have four people sharing two queen beds, each person will pay just $26.25 per night (before tax)—which is cheaper than any hotel in town or AirBnB.

Hotels often have a waitlist for rooms (and it’s a holiday week), so it is likely that all rooms that are released back into the general pool will immediately become unavailable for conference guests. If any rooms do remain at the Hyatt after that date, they will also dramatically increase in price. Rooms at other hotels on a holiday weekend with be both significantly more expensive, much further away from the site of the conference, and will cause you to incur additional transit costs. Because of this, we strongly encourage conference attendees to book their rooms as soon as possible.

If any guests would prefer to make reservations over the phone, you can use the following phone numbers:

U.S. guests: 1-888-421-1442
International guests: 1-402-592-6464

(Make sure to mention that you are attending the Socialism 2016 conference when you call in order to get the discounted conference rate.)

The Socialism 2016 conference will take place from Friday, July 1st, to Monday, July 4th.

Registration will begin on Friday, July 1st at 11am. The first meeting will begin at 1pm, and the last meeting of the day will end at 9pm.

On Saturday and Sunday the conference will run from 9:30am to 9pm. On Monday the conference will run from 9:30am until the final rally ends at 3pm.

(Please note that this year’s conference will take place from Friday to Monday not from Thursday to Sunday, as sometimes in years past).

How to get here
The Hyatt Regency McCormick is located just a few blocks from the Cermak-Chinatown Red Line station as well as the Cermak-McCormick Green Line station. The hotel is on several major bus lines as well as Metra commuter rail.

You can find detailed options for airport transportation on the Hyatt’s website:

Driving directions from O’Hare:
Driving Directions from Midway Airport:

Conference attendees will receive discounted, on-site parking at a rate of $17 per day.

There is also a very limited amount of free and metered parking on neighborhood streets. Guests who choose this option should be aware of any posted parking restrictions and regulations set by the City of Chicago, as private companies hired by the city will ticket and boot aggressively.

The annual Socialism Conference offers free, on-site childcare for children aged 6 months to 13 years to all conference attendees who purchase a conference ticket and inform us of their childcare needs by the childcare registration deadline. We make this a priority so that all parents can attend and fully participate in the conference knowing their children are enjoying themselves as well.

You can register for childcare at the same time as you register for the conference. During registration you will be asked to note whether you will need childcare during the course of the conference, how many children you will need it for, and information about them (names, ages, special needs).

The deadline for childcare this year is midnight (CST) on Sunday, June 5. Because we need adequate time to coordinate childcare and determine how many staff members we’ll need, we will not be able to accept any requests for childcare after this deadline.

If you have any special needs you would like the conference to be aware of in advance, please email us at

The Hyatt hotel and all conference activities are wheelchair accessible.

Spanish-language translation is available throughout the conference. Please make your request for translation when you register on-site. To allow us time to arrange for adequate time to arrange for translation, please inform us of your needs by Friday, June 10. If you forget to mention that you need translation during registration, please email by the deadline with your request.

An all-gender bathroom will be available on the second floor of the conference center for the duration of the conference.

Press and recording
Press passes for the conference must be approved in advance by emailing: The deadline to apply for a press pass is Friday, June 24th.

We do not allow videotaping at the conference. We will make audio and select video recordings of all sessions freely available after the conference at our multimedia website,

The Hyatt Regency McCormick Place is a non-smoking hotel. Conference attendees may not smoke in their rooms or within 15 feet of the buildings. There will be a large patio near meeting rooms and the bar/restaurant where smoking is permissible.

Where to eat
Attendees will be responsible for all their own meals. The Hyatt has three restaurants and a to-go cafe inside the hotel.

The hotel will provide breakfast and lunch cash stations immediately outside the conference center next to the Prairie room with special conference discounts.

Hotel rooms include refrigerators, and we encourage attendees to bring food from home, make the short trip to Trader Joe’s, or order grocery delivery from Instacart to stock up for the weekend (you must include a room number on your order).

The hotel bar will be open all weekend. Last call is at 1:15am. You are welcome to have your own alcohol in your guest room but please do not bring outside beverages into the public areas of the hotel.
